What to do right now
- Shut off the water. Your main shut-off is usually in the basement, where the water line comes through the floor or front wall, beside the water meter. Turn it clockwise (or a quarter-turn for a lever) until it stops.
- Kill power to wet areas. If water is near outlets, a furnace or the electrical panel, switch off those breakers only if you can reach the panel while standing somewhere dry.
- Stop using drains if sewage is coming up a floor drain. Every flush or load of laundry adds to the backup.
- Call us at (780) 996-7950. Tell us what you see and we'll talk you through the next steps while the plumber is on the way.
Smell gas? Don't touch switches or phones inside. Leave the house and call ATCO Gas emergency at 1-800-511-3447 from outside. Once ATCO has made it safe, our gasfitters can repair the appliance or line. For a city water main break or a sewer problem on the street side, call EPCOR at 780-412-4500.
Emergency plumbing across Edmonton, day or night
Plumbing emergencies don't wait for business hours, and in Edmonton they tend to arrive in waves: the first −30 °C cold snap brings burst pipes in garages and exterior walls, spring melt overloads sump pumps, and a July cloudburst can back the city sewer into hundreds of basements in one evening. We plan for those surges, so you still get a plumber when everyone else is booked.
Every emergency call is handled by a licensed plumber in a fully stocked truck, carrying pipe, fittings, valves, water heater parts, drain machines and a sewer camera, so most problems are fixed on the first visit instead of "we'll come back with the part tomorrow."
Emergency pricing without the surprises
Emergency plumbing has a bad reputation for blank-cheque bills. Our approach: the plumber diagnoses the problem, explains what has to happen tonight to make things safe and what can wait for regular hours, and gives you a flat price before starting. After-hours calls carry an emergency rate, and we tell you what it is on the phone, before we roll a truck.
Often the right move at 2 a.m. is a temporary fix that stops the water, with the permanent repair booked for the morning at the regular rate. We'll always tell you when that's the cheaper option.
Common emergency calls we handle
Burst and frozen pipes
Copper and Poly-B lines in exterior walls, under bay windows, in attached garages and around hose bibs freeze and split in deep cold. We shut it down, find every split, repair or reroute the pipe, and help you with photos for an insurance claim. More on frozen and burst pipes.
Sewer backups
If sewage is coming up through a floor drain, the blockage is either in your own sewer line (roots, grease, a collapsed section) or the city main is surcharged. We clear your line, run a camera to find the cause, and tell you which it is. If the city sewer is the problem, a backwater valve stops it from happening again.
No hot water or a leaking tank
A tank leaking from the bottom can't be repaired, and in an Edmonton winter, no hot water is urgent. We carry common gas and electric tanks and can often replace one the same day, permit included.
Flooding basements and failed sump pumps
When the sump pump quits during spring melt, the pit overflows fast. We install a replacement pump on the spot and can add a battery backup and high-water alarm. See sump pumps.
