Plumbing Emergency: What to Do in the First 5 Minutes

Water where it shouldn't be? These steps limit the damage while help is on the way.

Smell gas? Leave the house now. Don't use switches, phones or lighters inside. From outside, call ATCO Gas emergency at 1-800-511-3447.

1. Shut off the water

Main shut-off: in most Edmonton homes it's in the basement, where the water line comes up through the floor or in through the front wall, next to the water meter. Turn a round handle clockwise until it stops, or turn a lever a quarter-turn so it's crosswise to the pipe.

Fixture shut-offs: for a toilet, sink or dishwasher, close the small valve on the supply line under or behind the fixture.

Water heater: close the cold-water valve on top of the tank. For a gas tank, turn the gas control to "Pilot" or "Off"; for electric, switch off its breaker.

2. Make it safe

  • Keep away from water near outlets, extension cords, the furnace or the electrical panel. Only switch off breakers if you can stand somewhere dry.
  • If sewage is involved, keep kids and pets out of the area.

3. Stop adding water

With a sewer backup, don't flush, shower, run the dishwasher or do laundry. Everything you drain adds to the backup.

4. Document it

Take photos and video of the water, damage and the source before cleaning up. Your insurer will want them.

5. Call for help
